Color:  Jasper Taconite is a deep red color to black or blue with darker small round inclusions.  The inclusion can vary in color from dark green, dark blue, or black.

Texture:  Medium to Fine grain

Luster:

Silica Fabrics / Fossils: Oolites

Patina: Patina ranges from a gray to tan, to light or dark brown.

Heat Treatment: Heat treatment make very little notable difference in texture or flaking quality.  Heat treatment causes the sediment inclusions to whiten.

Distribution Comments:

Jasper Taconite is associated with the Animikie Group of the Rainey River region.  Primary sources occur at Thunder bay, Ontario and in bedrock in northwestern Ontario.  Also found in glacial drift.  Primarily associated with the Thunder Bay region of western Ontario and northern Manitoba.  Has been found in glacial tills into Nebraska.  This is a local material.
